Sira Darksky was the eldest niece of the patriarch of the Darksky criminal family (he was her paternal uncle). All of her family members were involved in some criminal activity or another; a cousin two years younger than she had been known to steal pacifiers from other children.
But Sira was a purer soul than that. She was once pressed into shoplifting by her family; she got away with it, but unbeknownst to them, she returned the item later, confessed her crime, and offered to work at the store as recompense. The shopkeeper accepted this arrangement and Sira got herself some honest work, which her family hated.
Often Sira absented herself from family reunions, and she was just as often the topic of discussion. One of these discussions was overheard by a Mazoku (Demon) General named Terin, who did a lot of work with the Darksky family. This would not be the first time he heard Sira's name, but at the time, he shrugged. A normal human amongst an otherwise evil family was allowable.
Sira decided to leave Miran and head for the capital, Niel, known for its shrines and temples. Once there, she offered herself up to the shrine of Dalfeed as a priestess. She was accepted into the temple and finally she believed herself free of her family's taint.
When next Terin heard of her, he was amazed to hear she'd become a priestess. This simply wouldn't do; it was his job to fight Dalfeed and his minions. One of the illustriously evil Darksky family had become one of those minions?! It was impossible. Terin set out to rid the family of this blot on their name.
Sira headed out of the temple that night, not knowing what was awaiting her. She came across a young man who looked lost. She helped him, and he invited her to dinner. She accepted gratefully (being a priestess doesn't pay much), and had a grand time. He walked her home, asked if he could see her again, and she gave her consent. Going up to her room, she thought, "What a nice young man."
The courtship between her and her young man blossomed into love quickly, and she was also getting positive attention from the religious councils. When a demon began stalking the city at night, killing innocents, Sira was selected to join the hunt. She mentioned it to her boyfriend, and he was amazed. That night, the killings stopped. In fact, the killings ceased altogether. The council closed the case and Sira went back to being a normal priestess.
She couldn't have been happier. She hoped that her young man would propose soon; she wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of her life with him. She never noticed that he would not enter the temple grounds and she thought that the reason he wouldn't enter her apartment was that he was too much of a gentleman and didn't want to compromise her honor.
When, months later, the demon began killing once more, Sira rejoined the hunt. She knew she was close to catching the evil thing, and killing or imprisoning it would bring her great honor with the religious council. Doing this would make her petition to marry (for, as a priestess, she must ask the council's permission) fly through the council easily, she was sure.
Her heart pounding, she closed on the creature one night; she could hear the victim's dying gasps now as surely as she had heard the initial scream. It was being sloppy, trying to feed too quickly. She flared a holy light and...discovered her love, his face and hands blood-smeared, the now dead victim in his arms. They stared at each other in horror, and Sira fled, trying to hold down hot tears.
She ran and hid, and when Terin at last slunk past her dejectedly, she followed the man she had thought had loved her back to the cave he was living in.
The next morning, she was there when he woke, and she bound him with holy spells, creating a prison unbreakable by all who were not human. She had waited by him all night, waiting for him to awake so he would know that it was she who did this.
Having sealed away the demon, and the true love of her life, Sira returned to the temple and told the council the news. She was promoted and a couple of council members asked her about the young man she'd been known to keep company with. She shook her head and left.
Although showered with honors and praise for saving the city, Sira felt like her heart was an gaping wound, ripped open by betrayal. The man she had loved so deeply and whom she had thought had loved her in return, was a demon. She didn't know what his plans were, but they could not have been good. He was a demon.
She tried to take comfort in the knowledge that she had done some good for the world, and part of her did take what comfort it could in that. She had proven herself free of her family's taint. But...she did not feel happy.
Sira lived out the rest of her life quietly, never marrying, serving Dalfeed and eventually instructing novices. She never spoke of the incident that had won her such fame, and hated others to speak of it as well.
When she died, she was laid to rest with all the honors befitting a woman of her reputation and purity. Her soul went to the Dwelling of Souls in the Sea of Chaos to await rebirth, but whenever her chance for it has come up, she has refused. So her soul sleeps - to avoid the pain that life had been for her.
